The objective of this series is to bring important and careful economic analysis of health care issues to a broad community, with a particular emphasis on policy. The startling transformation of this industry, along with the chronic problems of the uninsured, the cost of care for the middle class, and the problem of financing Medicare all have important economic dimensions. As medical services and health insurance markets are transforming, whether one considers private insurance, the rise of competitive managed care insurers, or the creation of privately supplied options for Medicare, the need for study has grown. The series will provide a vehicle for presenting economic views on these subjects to a broader audience than is reached by professional journals, and will permit treatment of relevant policy issues in greater depth. It will also provide a regular and identified source of such studies.
