Academic Speaking and the Boundaries of Routinized Lexical Phrases

Best of Michigan
Susan M. Barone and Summer Dickinson

This content has been updated and expanded upon since originally appearing as a chapter in Understanding the Courses We Teach: Local Perspectives on English Language Teaching, edited by John Murphy and Patricia Byrd, in 2001.

In this e-single, Barone and Dickinson revisit the concepts and practices of the Academic Speaking course and how recent research and classroom practices have shaped current iterations of this English for Academic Purposes course. They provide English language instructors with relevant approaches and strategies for teaching conventional, formulaic lexical phrases in academic settings. This e-single also offers educators a cross-section of what may take place within the language learning classroom within a university setting to help address the challenge of creating authentic, realistic, and discipline-specific environments to simulate academic settings.

This BEST OF MICHIGAN e-single explores ideas on teaching academic lexical phrases and addresses other questions related to how students acquire and emulate formulaic language as they move toward constructing longer turns of speech:
•    Where do students pick up academic speaking phrases in university settings and in what ways?
•    Who carries the work of teaching these phrases within a university setting?
Susan M. Barone is Director of the English Language Center, Senior Lecturer of Applied Linguistics at Vanderbilt University, and co-author of American Legal English.
Summer Dickinson is ESL team lead for Smyrna Primary School and author of various publications related to language learning.
