Description
Harold B. Mattingly's work has always helped direct and develop the fields of numismatic and epigraphical studies. Here is a collection of his key numismatic essays gathered into an easily accessible volume with short introductions written by the author.
The studies presented in From Coins to History transformed our interpretations of numismatic evidence. In this volume Mattingly covers a wide range of time and cultures ranging from ca. 480 B.C. in Sicily to the early Roman Empire down to Nero. Even as Mattingly's work encompasses a broad historical scope, these studies are united in their approach to the numismatic evidence. They are bound together by a firm belief in new and extraordinary ways of integrating information gleaned from coins with other forms of historical evidence to enhance the historical picture.
Because many of these papers may be hard to find, collecting them in one volume will be of particular use to libraries and scholars of ancient history.
