Open Sesame

Understanding American English and Culture through Folktales and Stories
Planaria J. Price

Description

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

Open Sesame teaches culture and vocabulary through twenty-six of the most popular and enduring children's folktales and stories. Open Sesame facilitates discussions comparing and contrasting American folktales and stories with those of students' native cultures. Specific American cultural values are found in the text and debated by students who often find those values confusing and in conflict with their own values. Allusions learned from these American stories are extremely helpful for fluency. As students learn the stories, they learn more about American culture. Included are such classics as Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, Johnny Appleseed, and Paul Bunyan, and more recent tales such as Charlotte's Web and The Wizard of Oz.
