The University of Michigan's Center for South East Asian Studies dates its origin to the 1961 founding of the Centers for South and Southeast Asian Studies, which soon thereafter became national centers for language training and area-related studies and research. Since gaining its full independence in 1999, the Center for South East Asian Studies has grown to be one of the largest in the U.S., with over forty-five faculty associates representing a large number of University departments and professional schools.
